Interpersonal relations

During our life we will face both pleasant and unpleasant experiences which will be saved in our memory and which will have big influence on our behavior. Acoustic signals are often connected with our experiences, they are associated. When we hear any concrete sound which we heard once, the situation will appear in our mind which was connected with this sound. It can be positive reminiscence or negative one. Usually we overlook that positive ones, but sounds associated with some negative experience are evaluated as very unpleasant, even though for anybody else they doesn’t have this meaning. It is a part of natural mechanism of human organism and its function is to warn us. It is often resulted by escape or attack. Sometimes it can happen that this protective function is too sensitive and subsequently the reaction is inappropriate to the situation.

Adults can be oversensitive to sounds which are representing some warning or danger – for example the horning of police-car (together with the loudness) or the commercial jingle, but also the voice of our colleges which is similar to anybody’s voice who hurt you in the past. Autistic children are often very sensitive to certain sounds or tones. Even if they don’t associate these sounds with any concrete danger their reaction can be very excessive (paroxysm, crying).

The reeducation of the way we are listening modifies also our reactions – they become calm and adequate.

Clients who finished The Listening Program TOMATIS® are confirming an improvement in the area of emotional stability.
